HPS Update - October 7th

Hello HPS Families!

We hope you have had a wonderful weekend!  We are now in the swing of things with lots of activities happening in and around the school!  Looking ahead to next week there is lots on the go and we have some important dates to share with you:

Long Weekend - A reminder that Friday is a PD day and Monday is Thanksgiving so no students attend either of these two days!  We hope you enjoy a relaxing long weekend and will see you on the 15th!

Picture Retakes - Picture Retakes will be on Tuesday, October 29th.  Students who were not able to be here when pictures were initially taken or require retakes will be taken down to the gym so that they can have their picture taken.  To assist us in getting everyone through the gym efficiently, please complete the google form found at https://tinyurl.com/HPSpictureday and send the initial proof sheet from Lifetouch in with your child on Tuesday.  For students in Kindergarten, who attend on the alternate day, if you would like retakes, please register using the form and bring your child to the school in the morning before 9:30 and we will fit you into the list.

Younger Students Staying at School During Extra-Curricular Events - With the start of extracurricular events for our Jr Highs we wanted to take an opportunity to remind parents that ideally, younger siblings do not remain at the school during practices and games.  There is no additional supervision during these times and it can become challenging for coaches to focus on athletes as well as monitor younger siblings.  If siblings must stay they are expected to remain in the gym until practice is concluded.

New Band Jump Start Clinic - Our students who are new to Band will be heading to Spruce Grove to come together with other students from Copperhaven, Meridian Heights and Broxton Park to spend some time with SGCHS band students for an immersive morning designed to help them get the jump on their new instrument!  The Bus will leave at 8:45 am on Tuesday, Oct 8th.

Grade 9 Students to PARTY Program - Our Grade 9s will be headed to the Misericordia Hospital to participate in the PARTY program offered by AHS on Tuesday this week.  This program offers students a sobering experience on the dangers of drinking and driving and helps to provide some real-life experience as to some of the consequences of these behaviours.  Students require a specific brown bag lunch for this day, please take a moment to review the letter that was sent out with specifics about what they need to bring.  Also, please note that the bus will be departing before the start of the school day so students will need to make arrangements to get to school a bit earlier in order to make the bus which is leaving at 8:15 am.

Students Lates - We appreciate that getting back into the swing of things after the summer is a challenge and that getting out the door in time to start the day takes some getting used to.  Studies have demonstrated that being chronically late can be a problem for students and learning, not only does it cause a disruption to the classroom but can be difficult for the student.  Your support in getting your students to school on time is much appreciated.

School Council & PAL Meetings - Our School Council and PAL Meetings will be held on October 15th in the staff room.  The PAL Meeting will run from 5:30-6:30 and the School Council meeting will run from 6:30-7:30.  We hope to see you there!

Student Parent Teacher Interviews Booking - Our upcoming Student Parent Teacher interviews are coming up next week on October 23rd and 24th from 4:30-7:30 at the school.  We will be opening up schedules for booking on Tuesday, Oct 15th at 9:00 AM.  To book online please go to https://hps.teacherconferences.net/ and register for an account.  As in previous years, we have to delete the users from last year so you will need to sign up for a new account, however, you can use the same email address you have used in the past.  All bookings available time slots are shown online, however, if you have trouble booking things please contact the office and we can assist you in booking them.

Halloween Hoopla is Coming - High Park will again fill with Ghouls and Goblins, Princesses and Super Heroes and all manner of animals and creativity on October 25th from 6:00 to 9:00.  We will have a haunted classroom and dancing in the gym with DJ CJ as well as a concession.  Admission is $5/person.  Please note, students are required to be accompanied to this event by parents and unaccompanied students will unfortunately not be allowed to attend.  We hope to see you there!

Newsletters & School Communications - You can expect to receive a copy of the HPS Update similar to this one weekly (usually on Sundays) and a copy of the school calendar with upcoming dates monthly will be posted to our website.  We will also be posting information to our website at highpark.psd70.ab.ca, these news items will take the place of the regular aspects of our monthly newsletter in addition to other important information.

Tabs for Wheels – Along with a local non-profit group, we are now collecting tabs from aluminium cans to support the purchase of motorized scooters for those in need.  This is a great way for children to get involved in helping others in our community!  Please send tabs with your children who will be able to place these in our collection bucket in the office.  Along with other local schools, we’re hoping to reach a goal of 1 million tabs this year!  Let’s help this great joint effort!

As always, should you have any questions please feel free to contact me at the school at 780-963-2222 or via email at bspence@psd70.ab.ca or stop by the office!

Have a great week!
